Terraria Server FAQs

What are Terraria servers?
Terraria servers are multiplayer worlds where players can explore, build, fight bosses and progress through the game together. A server may follow the standard Terraria progression closely or change the experience with custom rules, plugins, events, items or other content. Servers can also differ in world difficulty, PvP rules, progression state and whether characters bring items from other worlds.
What is the difference between vanilla and modded Terraria servers?
Vanilla Terraria servers use the standard game without major gameplay mods, although they may still use server-side administration or quality-of-life tools. Modded servers can add new items, enemies, bosses, classes, biomes and progression through mods such as those supported by tModLoader. Players normally need compatible mods and versions installed when joining a modded server.
What do Classic, Expert and Master Mode mean on Terraria servers?
Classic, Expert and Master Mode change the difficulty of enemies and bosses as well as some rewards and game mechanics. Classic provides the standard difficulty, Expert increases enemy difficulty and introduces additional boss rewards, while Master Mode increases the challenge further. The world difficulty applies to the server world, so players should check the selected mode before joining.
How does progression work on a Terraria server?
Terraria progression is largely driven by exploration, equipment upgrades and defeating bosses. Important milestones unlock new NPCs, items and areas, while defeating the Wall of Flesh changes the world into Hardmode and opens a much larger stage of progression. Servers may start from a fresh world, already be in Hardmode or use custom rules that change when bosses and content become available.
How does PvP work on Terraria servers?
Terraria supports optional player-versus-player combat, but servers can use it in very different ways. Some keep PvP disabled and focus entirely on cooperative building and progression, while others run arenas, teams, events or dedicated PvP worlds. Server rules may also restrict equipment, healing, character imports or specific items to keep competitive play balanced.
What are plugins and server-side modifications in Terraria?
Terraria servers can use server software and plugins to add features without completely changing the base game. These can include commands, permissions, protected building areas, economies, teleportation, minigames, anti-cheat systems and custom events. Server-side plugins differ from full gameplay mods because players may be able to connect with a normal Terraria client without installing the same modifications.
